OMNFJELLET

It is the last day in July 2019. We have a kind of tradition of ending the summer holidays by taking a summit trip. The willingness to go to places we have not been to before is always present. As we are lucky to have a car, we have no excuses to go a little further than to the nearest forrest close to the city.

I looked at Norgeskart - a website, and found a mountain called Omnfjellet. The mountain is located in Orkanger / Snillfjord municipality and looks like a gentle mountain to climb. So we pack up what we need and get on the road. Drive to Orkanger and follow E39. It takes us up towards Gangåsvatnet and Søvasskjølen / Hemnkjølen. After the tunnel, turn right onto road 714. Hardmoen cabin field is not far away up to the left. Hardmoen climbing field is located to the right in this area. We have been there and explored climbing opportunities. You then come up to Våvatnet and turn left. Not many kilometers afterwards, you turn left into a large parking lot. Can not be avoided.

It's shorts and t - shirt weather. Still, it's okay to bring a small windbreaker as the mountain is unpredictable and the temperature is lower the higher up you go. Omnfjellet is 830 meters high. The trail is well used and easy to follow all the way up. Steinbrothytta is probably halfway between the parking lot and the top and it`s nice to take a break here. There are more than just us walking this mountain this day, but it is far from cramped of space. After lunch and plenty of water we continue up and it is nice to climb a peak that is not so steep. Calmly we approach the top and suddenly we are there. There is a great view to all sides.

As avid geocachers, we of course find the cache that is located not too far from the cairn. We have also seen that there is another cache at Omnfjellvarden. It is located a little beyond and is at 847 meters above sea level. Since we are already here, we see no reason not to go to this cairn. We arrive and find the cache before we walk calmly back and follow the path down. At the cabin we take another little break before we happily get down to the car with a new experience planted in our heads and on our mobiles. My watch showed 12.83 km and I used 20,021 steps up. Lovely to have this mountain in the box. We will be going on this trip again. Highly recommended.
